LEAP Quality of Writing
Assessment Tool
A specialized AI instrument designed to evaluate student writing using official LEAP scoring criteria. This tool provides structured, rubric-aligned feedback on drafts for English, U.S. History, and Civics, helping students refine their work through transparency and disciplined AI use.
Why Only Student Writing Evaluators?
AI adds little value to multiple-choice items because they are deterministic. These tasks rely on fixed answer keys and rule-based logic that traditional machines already handle perfectly.
Student writing is different. It is scored probabilistically, relying on human judgment to interpret reasoning, evidence use, and depth of understanding. This inherent subjectivity makes writing a natural fit for AI—not to replace human scorers, but to model their reasoning process.
However, AI prompts cannot be static. They require continuous refinement to accurately capture this judgment. This tuning is best performed by a committee of teachers and other educators. Only collective human oversight ensures that AI judgments remain aligned with instructional goals, allowing the system to evolve with the classroom rather than becoming a rigid, oversimplified scoring mechanism.
